Tall Ships, Tall Ships, Tall Ships! Between Boston Harborfest, New London OpSail and Ocean State Tall Ships I’m about Tall-Shipped out for the next several years!
Yet, I couldn’t resist hitting the water on Monday, July 9, with my wife and daughter for a look at the 13 vessels that visited Newport for the 2012 Ocean State Tall Ships event. At noon a magnificent fleet assembled outside the East Passage of Narragansett Bay before filing past Castle Hill, Fort Adams, Rose Island and under the Newport-Pell Bridge. Among the participating ships were the Picton Castle, Bounty, Peacemaker, Mystic Whaler, Aurora, Lynx and Providence.
Crowds lined the rocks and slopes along both sides of the East Passage, and a variety of boats from aluminum skiffs to sleek, modern yachts gathered to watch the procession. We captured it all on video (see above)—and maybe even caught you if you were on the water—before ducking into Newport for a bite to eat.
Now the ships will scatter to the 4 corners of the world, waiting, we presume, to reassemble for the next big celebration. Hopefully, BoatingLocal will be there to cover it.
