All Marine Network of Massachusetts has just launched “Smart Boating”, a comprehensive 4-DVD box set that offers recreational boaters professional-level training in boat operation, navigation and safety procedures. Hosted by Capt. Steve Larivee, president of boating-education company Maritime Smarts, the program walks the viewer through the fundamentals of boating (fresh and saltwater), including rules of the road, navigation, boat handling, docking procedures, safety and much more. And even though “Smart Boating” is aimed at novices, even experienced boaters can glean useful information from the program.
After watching the complete set on our computer, we found it to be professional and easy to follow. Larivee is a personable host, and we liked the the videos’ frequent use of animation, which helps to illustrate some of the key points, especially those concerning boat handling and navigation. Furthermore, the menu makes it easy to skip to whichever section you want to view, or lets you review a certain topic. We found it to be very intuitive and easy to navigate. By the way, the DVDs are compatible with PC or Mac.
“Smart Boating” features over 10 hours of instruction and information, and includes over 250 questions that reinforce the subjects learned and will help prepare boaters for state boating-safety certification tests. “Smart Boating” sells for $79.95—a bargain for the boatload of information it contains.
