The Associated Press reports that an 80% cut to the catch of yellowtail flounder on Georges Bank is “set to deal a vicious blow to a fishing industry already edging toward ruin.” The cut was made after new data showed a steep decline in yellowtail numbers.

Last year, U.S. groundfish fishermen on Georges Bank were allotted about 1,140 metric tons of yellowtail. This year, the quota is around 218 metric tons, effective May 1.

While yellowtail are not among the region’s most valuable fish, the new limits will prevent fishermen from targeting other groundfish species that share the same habitat as flounder.
