SouthCoastToday: A lone pilot whale has strayed into New Bedford Harbor, and animal rescue personnel are trying to get close enough to examine it before deciding what to do, the New Bedford Standard-Times reports this afternoon.
Brian Sharp, a marine mammal rescuer from the Yarmouthport office of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said the 15-foot whale does not appear to be behaving in a healthy way, but only a closer examination and a blood test will say for certain.
The whale was first spotted near Palmer’s Island by a fuel barge pilot at around 8 a.m., according to those at the scene of its current position near Capt. Leroy’s on Pope’s Island.
