WPRI.com reports that marine researchers helped free a humpback whale that had become entangled in fishing gear on Friday, May 18, off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts.
The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, which sent a crew to free the whale, told WPRI that a whale-watch boat noticed the entangled humpback and notified them. The PCCS crew worked for 4 hours to remove 2 buoys and line from the whale. Due to safety concerns, researches were unable to remove all of the line, but felt that the whale would be able to survive.
The whale was identified as “Basmati,” a 14-year-old female whale that the PCCS is familiar with.
