The goal of National Marina Day is to show the public what the marina experience is all about. From hosting fishing tournaments to providing boating access to supporting environmental efforts, marinas play a major role in many people’s ability to enjoy the water, and Three Belles Marina in Niantic, Connecticut, is no exception.
In June 2012, area boaters—as well as people who might be curious about boating—were invited to a Marina Day open house at Three Belles, just off the Niantic River. Three Belles (a BoatingLocal sponsor) is a family-owned and -operated facility that caters to all types of boaters, from hardcore fishermen to sailors and paddlers, and owners Tobey and Libby Russ have gone to great lengths to upgrade the marina since buying it 7 years ago.
At the Marina Day event, Three Belles served up BBQ, offered Hobie kayak demos at its new kayak and SUP rental center, and had the Coast Guard Auxiliary on hand to perform courtesy safety inspections. The local environmental group Save the River, Save the Hills was also present to spread the word about how boaters can help protect the river and the nearby Oswagatchie Hills nature preserve, a popular picnicking and swimming area.
