August 8, 2010: The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a reported downed aircraft off Charlestown Beach, Rhode Island.
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders received multiple calls about a small “ultralight” aircraft plunging into the water approximately 1/2 mile from the beach at approximately 9:00 p.m. Saturday night. Coast Guard rescue crews from Station New London and Station Point Judith searched approximately 150 square miles of ocean with response boats and an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter.
The search lasted through the night and into Sunday morning. No reports of missing aircraft or missing persons have been received. Boaters in the area are urged to call (508-457-3211) with any information regarding the missing aircraft.
