Bridgeport News reports on the daily duties of officers Joseph Maida and Glenn Ponganis, who patrol the waters off Stratford, Connecticut, from Bridgeport Harbor to the Milford border and north on the Housatonic River to Shelton.
The officers are tasked with making sure recreational vessels are equipped with the required safety equipment, including audible signals, floatation devices and flares. They also need to be able to determine whether operators are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and make sure boaters are properly certified.
“We can board anybody at any time,” Ponganis is quoted as saying.
The most common violation, according to the article, is speeding in the 1 -mile no-wake zone from the Birdseye boat launch to the Sikorsky Bridge.
