EastBayRI: A famous sailboat with a new career visited Narragansett Bay this summer in search of flotsam and jetsam.
American Promise, the boat that Dodge Morgan sailed into the record books — fastest non-stop circumnavigation (150 days), first American to accomplish the feat — visited Bristol in July.
Mr. Morgan died last September but his 60-foot cutter (designed by Portsmouth’s Ted Hood) sails on.
These days the boat is home to the Rozalia Project trash tour, an environmental and educational effort led by Rachael Miller (Brown University grad) and James Lyne. Fitted out with high-tech gear including camera-equipped ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and imaging and side-scan sonar systems, they travel the region in search of bottom trash with a special emphasis on plastics.
