Rhode Island Town Seeks Robotic Lifesaving Device

Town officials and community organizations in Westerly, Rhode Island, are raising money to purchase two remote-controlled lifesaving devices to be deployed on beaches this summer, according to an article in the Providence Journal.

Known as EMILY —or Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard — each device will motor to a swimmer in distress, who can then grip the device and be pulled to shore by the device or by a lifeguard.
