TheDay.com: The upper Niantic River, a popular spot for tubing and waterskiing, has been showing high levels of bacteria this summer. But because it’s not officially a swimming area, no state or local agency routinely monitors the water or restricts access.

So the head of a local conservation group started taking his own water samples. Fred Grimsey, of Save The River-Save The Hills, said last week he documented high levels of bacteria in the water between Route 1 and Sandy Point after a rainstorm and wants more regulation in the upper Niantic River.
