New Bedford Community Rowing is hosting a 5,000-meter “head race” this Saturday, Oct. 9. Festivities will kick off around 11:30 a.m., with the first race starting at 12:30 and the last at approximately 4:00 pm. The regatta will include rowers of all experience levels.
The New Bedford Popes Island Regatta is a head-style race with a sharp turn similar to a stake race. There are 2 bridges to pass through and lots of steering. It makes a great practice run for the Head of the Charles later this month.
Unlike most head races, the course will circle Popes Island, where visiting teams and vendors will be located. Spectators will be able to watch a large portion of the race.
