The New England District Army Corps of Engineers is gearing up to perform maintenance work on the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier. The work includes the replacement of wheels on the sector gates, steel repair, fender replacement and miscellaneous painting. The work will begin April 11 and be finished July 8, 2012.
Boaters are advised that the hurricane barrier will be out of service and not functional to control tide levels and storm surge in New Bedford/Fairhaven Harbors.
Maintenance work will be performed with the sector gates inside the gate pockets. The navigation channel will remain open at all times. During the project, a work barge may be located adjacent to the sector gates. Small vessels will be able to navigate the channel, but the barge may have to be moved to accommodate larger vessels that require the full width of channel.
