While covering the Boston Harborfest/Tall Ships event in Boston, we happened upon a large, colorful racing sailboat lingering off Castle Island. As we were photographing the boat, a short, swarthy man appeared on deck, furiously waving an Italian flag.
He turned out to be Andrea Mura from Cagliara, Italy, who, along with Riccardo Apolloni, had recently won the 2012 Two Stars Regatta. The 2,786-mile race began in Plymouth, England, and finished in Newport, Rhode Island, on June 17. Mura and Appollini— the first Italians to win the event—covered the distance in just 13 days, 12 hours, and 47 minutes, maintaining an average speed of 8.6 knots and beating the 1994 record of 15 days, 31 minutes.
Not ones to miss a party, Mura and Appollini decided to stick around for a bit and bring their boat to the Tall Ships event. We hope they had a great time!
