July 12: At approximately 2:40 p.m., fire departments throughout Martha’s Vineyard responded to huge fire that has destroyed Coast Guard Station Menemsha’s boathouse, a truck and trailer, and severely damaged its pier.
All 13 crewmembers who were on station at the time were safely evacuated, according to a
report. The station’s 47-foot rescue boat was also evacuated without damage, but some nearby private vessels were damaged by the blaze. The Menemsha harbormaster has ordered all vessels to leave the harbor, according to the Martha’s Vineyard Times. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Coast Guard cutter Sanibel is on scene and assisting with cleanup and emergency response calls.
