On October, 2, 2012, I had the pleasure of fishing with Bill Bryant and Jules Silvis of Bill and Jules Boston Saltwater Fishing charters out of Quincy, Massachusetts. Bill and Jules are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides with a passion for putting their customers on big striped bass and bluefish in and around the waters of Boston Harbor. And that usually means a quick run to the fishing grounds from their home base at the Town River Marina in Quincy.

That’s where we met up at 5:30 a.m. before climbing aboard the couple’s 27’ Polar center console and heading off in search of pogies (menhaden) to use as striper bait. We found a school right inside the river, and managed to snag about a dozen baits before running to a favorite spot off nearby Hull.

Conditions were perfect—except for an abundance of “mung weed” and a lack of fish. After an hour or so of slow-trolling back and forth over the boulder-strewn bottom, we had only landed a single bluefish, so we pulled stakes and moved to a different spot near one of the Boston Harbor islands. Within minutes we had a customer.

It turned out to be the video fish we needed—a 28-pound striper. On the next drift we nailed a 15-pound bass, and had a few more run-offs before the tide died and it was time to head in.

All in all, it was a fun morning, and I came home with enough fish for several meals—as well as some great tips on fishing live bait for big stripers in Boston Harbor! You can do the same by contacting Bill and Jules here:
