Riptide Report: Topwater Striper Action Gets Even Better
Today (5.17.12) I had Team Quad from the Cape Cod Salties out for a half-day Spring Special Bass trip. It started off as a crap morning with me snapping my VHF antenna on a gas station overhang (yeah, I’m an idiot and left it up). But once we hit the water, the bad mojo could not overcome Team Quad and the skills they were showing!
We hit the same areas as the last few trips, and sure enough the Raymarine Super HD radar found the birds at a couple miles (it really is getting too easy). I headed over to the melee and the guys were tight on the first cast. The new Raymarine CHIRP sounder got a workout with the amount of fish under the boat. The screen shots pretty much tell how many fish we had.
The guys got on fish in the 30”-35″ range, with a bunch of doubles, triples and quads. A few blues were mixed in, but it was mostly a bass bite.
Team Quad continued their clinic for the rest of the morning. I spent 4 hours hanging over the gunwale as they took turns walking fish down to me to unhook and release. Before I could get all the fish unhooked the fish guy would be tight again. It was a non-stop slay-fest. This could go down as one of the best half-day bass trips in recent memory.
