Panel Confirms Dire Cod Assessment

The Gloucester Times reports that a peer review panel has validated the recent stock assessment of Gulf of Maine cod, which found that the stock is overfished and subject to continued overfishing.
The assessment, which reversed the optimistic report from a benchmark 2008 assessment, indicates that the rebuilding deadline of 2014 could not be met even if the fishery was completely shut down.
