Boston Harbor Report: 8.3.12
Bill & Jules Boston Saltwater Fishing reports on the action in and around Boston Harbor for August 3, 2012.
The bite is still happening, there is no consistency, so it makes every day an adventure. Got into some bass on top the other day, but the action was very sporadic. Still, we managed a couple of fish up to 30”. While fishing some big pogies off the back of the boat we also picked up a nice 30-pounder. Gotta love those big baits!
The following day we went out and found pogies in a different location, but these baits were huge. Managed to get about 2 dozen baits and fished some clean, open water. The day started out beautiful, did not find much topwater action, just a pop here and there. We trolled the big baits for a while and lost a dozen in about an hour to some big slammer bluefish. Only problem was we just could not get them hooked up, even with the double treble rigs. Those yellow-eyed monsters were eating almost the whole pogie up to the gill plate and missing that back hook.
A lot of times the fish will come back and eat the other half, or a fat striped bass come up from under the blues and eat the other half. But not that day, although we did have some big baits ripped off the hook by bass.
After switching to artificials, we hooked up several more bluefish. Got them all the way to the boat and plink…gone. What a frustrating day.
I guess we’ll just have to beat them up tomorrow. Here is a photo of a nice bass taken on a pogy the other day. This fellow is from Texas and was here visiting with his brother in law. They have tried to get him a striped bass before on several other occasions, but the timing just never worked out—until today!
