CapeCodTimes: Just a few miles southeast of Chatham, the monotony of the ocean erupted in an explosion of life. Humpback whales moved with ponderous purpose among flocks of terns and offshore birds that crashed into the sea with folded wings.

With a flip of a tail, one humpback after another dove and then surfaced, their pleated pouches leaking water, their mouths filled with sand lances.
The crew of the Tammy Rose hustled to put out gear: a spider’s web of lines trailing lines, coming off the stern from thousand-dollar rods with ham-sized brass reels. Squid bars that mimicked a panicked school of fish extended out from both sides of the vessel, towed by large outriggers.
